Pressure and moving off the app
Pushed to move off the app right away
2 reports mention this, 1 in the last 90 days.
A match or new contact who wants your number, WhatsApp, or email within the first few messages, before you've talked about anything real. People report it most on dating apps and social media, often as the first step in a longer script.
What it looks like
- The second or third message asks for your number or another app.
- A reason attached: 'I hardly check this app', 'my subscription is ending', 'it's easier to talk over there'.
- Once you're off the app, the affection ramps up and the profile that matched you goes quiet or disappears.
- The same person turns up later with the same opener under a different name.
Why do scammers want off the dating app so fast?
Dating apps and marketplaces watch for scam behavior and let you report it with one tap. Off the app, there's no record, no moderation, and no easy way to warn the next person. Moving you early also gets your phone number, which is useful for the next round of contact even if this one goes nowhere. It isn't proof by itself, but it's the step almost every romance script starts with.
What to do
- Stay on the app until you've had a real conversation, ideally a video call. Someone genuine won't mind.
- If they push after you've said no once, that's your answer.
- Look up their number here before you save it. If it has reports, add yours.
- Report the profile on the app so it gets reviewed.
